How long have you been working in costs?

I have been working in costs for 16 years, mainly at costs firms in central outer London, with a brief period in-house at Duncan Lewis Solicitors before joining PIC.

When did you join PIC?

I joined PIC in January 2022.

What work do you do?

I am a Costs Lawyer at PIC. My current role is focused on drafting, but my wider experience includes drafting, negotiation and advocacy on inter partes costs matters.

I have worked for both Claimant and Defendant clients across a range of case types, including personal injury matters such as road traffic accidents, employers’ liability, public liability and clinical negligence. My experience also includes commercial cases, probate cases and judicial review matters.

I hold a Law Degree from the University of Wolverhampton, completed the Legal Practice Course at the College of Law, Bloomsbury, and qualified as a Costs Lawyer in 2018.

Interesting cases

• Mullaraj v Secretary of State for the Home Department [2021], a case often discussed in relation to Part 36 and “beating” offers. I prepared the Bill of Costs and successfully argued the Applicant’s entitlement to costs.
• The case reinforced the point that even where a paying party’s offer is beaten by a small margin, the receiving party can still succeed and recover costs.

Additional personal details:

Outside of work, I am happily married and have two small children who I adore, but who take up most of my time. Right now, my current interests are mostly limited to children’s television and activities.
